- 4 Basic Functions of the Rig • Hoisting • Rotating • Circulating • Well Control
- The Hoisting System: Function • Provides a means of lowering or raising drill strings, casing strings, and other subsurface equipment in or out of the hole
- The Hoisting System: Parts
- The Mast Crown Monkey board Mast Rig floor V door
- Types of Derricks • Triple- has the capacity of pulling 90’ stands of pipe • Double- has the capacity of pulling 60’ stands of pipe • Single- has the capacity of pulling 30’stands of pipe (one 30-ft joint)
- “A” Frame • The “A” frame structure on a jackknife is used to raise and lower the mast. It also supports the derrick in the raised position.
- Substructure • Supports the rig floor and the weight of the drillstring • Provides space and support for the equipment and for people to work • Provides space for the Blowout Preventers (BOP’s)
- V-Door Ramp • The ramp which connects the “V” door to the cat walk.
- Monkey Board • The platform on which the derrick man works when tripping pipe.
- The Drawworks • The principal function is to convert the power source into a hoisting operation and provide braking capacity to stop and sustain the weights imposed when lowering or raising the drill string.
- Cathead • A shaft with a lifting head that extends on either side of the drawworks. • Major functions: – It is used in making up and breaking out tool joints in the drill string. – It is also used as a hoisting device for heavy equipment on the drill floor.
- Drilling Line • Does not tend to wear uniformly • Maintained in good condition by following a scheduled slip-and-cut program
- Fastline • Part of the drilling line between the drawworks and the crown block • Moves as the traveling block is raised or lowered
- Drawworks Braking Systems • Band-type brakes on the drawworks • Auxiliary brakes (used only when RIH on trip to prevent burning of the band-type brakes) – Hydro-dynamic type – Electromagnetic type
- Electromagnetic Aux Brake • Braking is provided by two opposing magnetic fields. The magnitude of the magnetic fields is dependent on the speed of rotation and the amount of external excitation current supplied.
- Crown Block • A series of sheaves affixed in the top of the derrick used to change the direction of pull from the drawworks to the traveling block.
- Parts of The Traveling Block • Hook – Where the drill stem and elevators are attached • Elevators Elevator bails– Set of clamps that are latched onto drill pipe or casing to allow the driller to raise or lower the drillstring or casing string Elevators
- Elevators Elevator bail or link
