FE 02-07 Motion Compensating Components
•Designed to nullify the effects of rig heave on the drillstring or other hook-supported equipment
•It is mounted between the hook and the traveling block
•Controlled and monitored by driller
•Also called heave compensators

- Motion Compensating System • 3 Basic Types – Drillstring Compensator – Marine Riser and Guideline Tensioner – Telescopic or slip joint
- Heave • Wave induced vertical movement of the floater
- Marine Riser: Functions • A large diameter pipe that connects the subsea BOP’s to a floater. • It provides a path for the drilling fluid, from the borehole to the rig • To guide the drillstring and other tools to the wellhead on the sea floor
- Marine Riser
- Riser and Guideline Tensioners • Riser tensioners (riser heave compensating equipment) provide tension to the marine riser through a system of cables joined via sheaves to a series of pneumatic cylinders • Common practice is to install four to six tensioners • Guideline tensioners is to maintain the correct tension in the guidelines between the rig and the guide-base (located on the sea floor), regardless of rig heave
